Haida Hall Puppets
This is a paper casting (Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas, Jenny Nelson) off of a carving by Edenso Jim Hart. When fully operational with 3 persons (three young Massett Haida dancers), a wheeled platform (Simon Davies), handles (broom) and a long aluminium pole ( a dis assembled hang glider), a woven cedar head dress ( April Churchill )the puppet stood over 16 feet tall. It was danced only once in Old Massett at the Nagitlagadaa feast fro Edenso and was subsequently consumed by the fire that recently (summer 2005) consumed Kaadsnaa (Shark House).
The entrance of this great puppet into the hall in Old Massett was electrifying with hundreds of people standing, stamping feet and clapping hands as a number of smaller paper puppets cirlced around the great mask. One puppet was sold to a Haida dance group in South east Alaska. One puppet remains with Rockingraven. It is a Beaver also paper cast from an Edenso pole.
